It is also used against fish parasites in aquaculture. It inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and causes the acetylcholine (ACh) to accumulate in the nerve synapses thereby disrupting the nerve function.Trichlorfon is not approved for use in the European Union (EU) as a plant protection agent under the Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009, repealing the directive 91/414/EEC. But a default maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.01 mg/kg and 0.02 mg/kg is set for its presence in fresh/frozen fruits and tree nuts respectively as per the Reg. (EU) No 899/2012.
