Eriochrome(R) Black T forms complex with Ca2+ and Mg2+, but it binds more strongly to Mg2+ ions., Eriochrome(R) Black T is a hydroxyl-arylazo dye and is generally supplied as a monosodium salt. This dye exists as a dark violet powder with green metallic sheen. Eriochrome Black T is soluble in water and alcohol, but insoluble in common organic solvents. It is mainly used as an indicator in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) method to determine hardness of water.
