Descrição detalhada : GST (glutathione-S-transferase) represents a major group of detoxification enzymes, which are known to exist as multiple cytosolic and membrane-bound isoenzymes, with distinct catalytic and noncatalytic binding properties. Whereas the cytosolic enzymes are encoded by at least five distantly related gene families, the membrane-bound enzymes are encoded by single genes. GST is regulated and induced by a diverse range of xenobiotics. Many, but not all, inducers of GST, act through either the antioxidant-responsive element (ARE), the GST P enhancer 1(GPE), the xenobiotic-responsive element (XRE), or the glucocorticoid-responsive element (GRE). Barbiturates may transcriptionally activate GST through a Barbie box element. Many of the compounds that induce GST are also GST substrates, or are metabolized by cytochrome P-450 monooxygenases into compounds that can serve as GST substrates. Because the expression levels of GST play a critical role in determining the sensitivity of cells to a broad range of toxic chemicals, GST is suggested to contribute to resistance against carcinogens, antitumor drugs, environmental pollutants, and products of oxidative stress.
