HGF/SF is a potent effector of growth, movement, differentiation and invasiveness of epithelial and cancer cells. It can induce epithelial-mesenchymal conversion of epithelial cells in culture, support epithelial branching duct formation in the developing lung and elicit a potent organotrophic function for regeneration of liver, kidney and lung through epithelial-stromal interactions.
