Descrição detalhada : Osteoprotegerin/TNFRSF11B, also known as Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 11B, Osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor, or Osteoprotegerin, (OPG), and encoded by the gene TNFRSF11B/OCIF/OPG, is a membrane bound receptor that acts as a decoy receptor for TNFSF11/RANKL and thereby helps to neutralize or regulate its function in osteoclastogenesis. Bone homeostasis is at least partially dependent upon the levels of TNFSF11 and TNFSF11B, and by acting as decoy or "extra" receptor for TNFSF11B the excess factor levels can be modulated. The activation of the receptors inhibits the activation of osteoclasts and promotes osteoclast apoptosis in vitro. OPG also seems to act as a decoy receptor for TNFSF10/TRAIL and help prevent against TRAIL mediated apoptosis, and TRAIL acts as antagonist for osteoclastogenesis, and thus again OPG appears to moderate osteoclast levels in a dynamic fashion. OPG is highly expressed in numerous tissues other than developing and adult bone germinal centers, but its exact role in these other tissues is still being examined.
