It associates with lipoproteins including very-low, low and high-density lipoproteins (VLDL, LDL and HDL). The synthesis of cholesteryl esters is mediated by acylCoA-cholesteryl-acyl transferase (ACAT) majorly in the endoplasmic reticulum of liver and intestinal cells.
