Descrição detalhada : In enzymology, a cholesterol 24-hydroxylase (EC 1.14.13.98) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction:cholesterol + NADPH + H+ + O2 --> (24S)-24-hydroxycholesterol + NADP+ + H2O. Cholesterol 24-hydroxylase, a cytochrome P450 (CYP46A1), is expressed at 100-fold higher levels in the brain than in the liver. This enzyme belongs to the family of oxidoreductases, specifically those acting on paired donors, with O2 as oxidant and incorporation or reduction of oxygen. Studies indicate that cholesterol 24-hydroxylase constitutes a major tissue-specific pathway for cholesterol turnover in the brain (Lund, 2003).
