Descrição detalhada : Cox-1, also known as Cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1, Cytochrome C oxidase polypeptide I, and encoded by the gene MT-CO1, CO1, COX1, MTCO1, is the catalytic subunit of Cytochrome C oxidase that forms the final reduction of oxygen to water in the respiratory chain. Subunits 1-3 form the functional core. Electrons originating in Cytochrome C are transferred via the copper A center of subunit 2 and the heme A of subunit 1 to the bimetallic center formed by the heme A3 and Copper B. The Cox-1 gene is encoded in the mitochondrion and the protein localizes to the inner mitochondrion membrane. It is expressed in all cells that contain functional mitochondria and mutations in Cox-1 are associated with various mitochondrial dysfunctional diseases that manifest themselves in defective vision, anemia, cardiomyopathy, muscle weakness and even some forms of cancer.
