Descrição detalhada : Cytochrome P450 7A1 (CYP7A1, CYPVII), also known as cholesterol 7-alpha-monooxygenase or cholesterol 7-alpha-hydroxylase, belongs to the cytochrome P450 family and is important for cholesterol homeostasis. CYP7A1 catalyzes a rate-limiting step in cholesterol catabolism and bile acid biosynthesis by introducing a hydrophilic moiety at position 7 of cholesterol. Detected primarily in the liver, CYP7A1 catalyzes the following reaction: Cholesterol + NADPH + O2 = 7-alpha-hydroxycholesterol + NADP+ + H2O. CYP7A1 is up-regulated by glucose and by cholestyramine, and is down-regulated by chenodeoxycholic acid.
