Descrição detalhada : G9a-Like Protein 1 (GLP1), also known as Euchromatic histone lysine N-methyl-transferase 1 (EMHT1), is a histone methyltransferase that methylates Lys9 of histone H3. H3Lys9 methylation is a marker for epigenetic transcriptional repression. EMHT1/GLP1 is targeted to histone H3 by different DNA-binding proteins like E2F6, MGA, MAX and/or DP1. During G0 phase, it contributes to silencing of Myc- and E2F-responsive genes, suggesting a role in G0/G1 transition in cell cycle. EMHT1/GLP1 is phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR. Defects in EHMT1 result in severe mental retardation, hypotonia, and epileptic seizures.
