Descrição detalhada : Ghrelin is a 28 amino acids peptide with an essential n-octonayl modification at Serine 3. This peptide hormone is known as an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor and shares sequence similarity with the peptide hormone Motilin. Ghrelin displays pleotropic actions including growth hormone secretion, feeding behaviour and gastrointestinal motility. It is predominantly produced by enteroendocrine cells from the gastrointestinal tract, but has been shown to play a significant role in neurotrophy, particularly in the hippocampus, and appears to be essential for cognitive adaptation to changing environments and the process of learning.
