JARID1D/KDM5D is a histone demethylase that specifically catalyzes the demethylation of tri- and di-methylated Lys4 of histone H3 (H3K4m3 and H3K4m2), but not methylated H3K9, H3K27, H3K36, H3K79, H4K20, or monomethylated H3K4. The KDM5D gene is mapped to the azoospermia factor (AZF) region known to be involved in spermatogenesis.
