Descrição detalhada : The glycolytic enzyme enolase (2-phospho-D-glycerate hydrolase, E.C. 4.2.1.11) is composed of two subunits and exists in three molecular forms in human brain: non-neuronal enolase (NNE; alpha, alpha'-enolase), neuron-specific enolase (NSE; gamma,gamma'-enolase, also known as 14-3-2 protein and NSP) and the short-lived heterodimer alpha, gamma'-enolase. The neuron specific form is a highly acidic homodimeric protin of 78kDa, which has been found in central and peripheral nervous elements and also in many neuroendocrine cells and derivative tumors. NSE is regarded as the best described serum marker for small cell lung cancer. In addition, the measurement of NSE levels in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid following cerebral ischaemia and traumatic head injury provides a reliable laboratory indicator of the degree of brain cell damage and may allow early prediction of prognostic outcome.
