ATM phosphorylates SMC1 on Ser957 and Ser966 both in vitro and in vivo. Phosphorylated SMC1 is part of the complex that functions as a downstream effector in both the ATM/NBS1 branch and the ATR/MSH2 branch of S-phase checkpoint.
