Vimentin protein with 466 amino acids is characterized with a highly conserved ?-helical "rod" domain that is flanked by non-?-helical amino- terminal "head" and carboxy-terminal "tail" domain., The VIM (vimentin) gene codes for an intermediate filament protein, that is expressed throughout mesenchymal cells. VIM gene is mapped to human chromosome 10p13.
