Ficoll(R) molecules are inert and not re-absorbed by proximal tubules. The structure is open and deformable, and not a rigid sphere thereby becoming a preferred choice in "crowding" experiments., Used in electrophoresis and as a hapten carrier. Most commonly used to prepare density gradients.
