Descrição detalhada : GranuCult(R) prime Hektoen Enteric Agar is a moderately to highly selective media for isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from food and clinical sources. This culture medium provides good colonial differentiation and inhibits some coliforms and other non-lactose-fermenting bacteria due to the presence of bile salts which suppresses the growth of accompanying bacteria. Shigella species overcomes the inhibitory effect of the bile salts due to the presence of relatively large amounts of peptone and carbohydrates. The media has two indicator dyes - bromothymol blue and acidic fuchsin which enables differentiation between lactose fermenters and non-lactose fermenters. Non lactose fermenters (Shigella and Salmonella) appear as bluish-green colonies whereas the lactose fermenters appear as yellowish to red colour colonies. Salmonella is differentiated from Shigella due to its ability to produce H2S, which reacts with thiosulfate or ferric ions to produce black colour colonies
