Descrição detalhada : CD33 is a member of the siglec family (sialic acid binding immunoglobulin-like lectins) referred to as Siglec-3 (Freeman SD, Kelm S, Barber EK and Crocker PR, 1995, Blood, 2005-2012). It is the smallest member of the siglec family having a molecular weight of 67 kDa (Peiper SC, Ashmun RA and Look TA (1988) Blood., 72: 314-321). CD33 mediates protein-carbohydrate cellular interactions in addition to protein-protein recognition (Crocker, 2002). The CD33 gene is located on chromosome 19 (Peiper, 1997). CD33 is expressed by subsets of monocytes and neutrophils. CD33 is the major antigen to differentially diagnose myeloid from lymphoid leukemias, as it is expressed on 90% of myeloid and not lymphoid leukemic cells (Andrews 1989; Griffin 1984; and Sabbath 1986). Committed hemapoietic progenitors, including multipotential stem cells (CFU-GEMM) and precursors of granulocytes and macrophages (CFU-GM) and early erythroid progenitors (BFU-E) express CD33 (Peiper, 1989 and 1997). Anti-CD33, WM-54, was included in the Fourth International Workshop and Conference on Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigens and studies by a number of laboratories confirmed its reactivity with CD33 (Peiper, 1989).
