The peptone provides amino acids and other complex nitrogenous substances. Glucose is a fermentable carbohydrate. Sodium chloride delivers osmotic balance. Bile salts inhibit the growth of Gram-positive accompanying bacterial flora. Di-potassium hydrogen phosphate is the buffering agent to stabilize the pH.mTSB is made selective for E. coli O157:H7 by adding bile salts in the media along with Novobiocin supplementation.
