It targets protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) and causes the accumulation of photosensitizing porphyrins, which in turn lead to lipid peroxidation and membrane disruption.Nitrofen is not approved for its use in the European Union (EU) as an active substance in plant protection products, according to Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009. But a default maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.01-0.02 mg/kg is applicable for its presence in products of plant and animal origin following the regulation (EC) No 149/2008.
