A systemic pesticide, it targets the RNA polymerase complex I and inhibits the synthesis of ribosomal RNA. It shows protective and curative abilities after its absorption through roots, stalks, and leaves. As per Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009, repealing the directive 91/414/EEC, metalaxyl is approved for use as a plant protection agent in the European Union. The Reg. (EU) 2017/1164 sets a maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.7 mg/kg and 0.01 mg/kg for the presence of metalaxyl in fresh/frozen fruits and tree nuts respectively, considering other mixtures of its constituent isomers including metalaxyl-M (sum of isomers). It is also included for monitoring in the Multiannual Control Programme for Pesticides Residues (MACP), run within the EU and EFTA for products of plant origin.
