It acts by inhibiting the activity of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme and blocking the hydrolysis of acetylcholine, causing hyperexcitation. Metolcarb is not approved for use in the European Union (EU) as a plant protection agent, following the Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009, repealing the Directive 91/414/EEC. But a default maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.01 mg/kg is set for metolcarb according to Art 18(1)(b) Reg 396/2005.
