It has a low aqueous solubility and is highly volatile. It acts by inhibiting the mitotic cell divisions in plant root and shoot tips. It is used to protect crops such as cotton, maize, soya beans, peppers, tomatoes, lentils, peanuts, and sunflowers against pre-emergence of a wide spectrum of annual grasses and broad-leaf weeds.Ethalfluralin is not allowed for use in the European Union and the decision to not include it in Annex I of Directive 91/414/EEC came to force on 12 December 2008. But a maximum residue limit (MRLs) of 0.01 mg/kg has been set according to Reg (EU) No 777/2013 for the presence of ethalfluralin in various products of plant and animal origin.
