It controls insects and nematode pests by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and preventing the hydrolysis of neurotransmitter acetylcholine.(1) Methomyl has to be monitored in the Multiannual Control Programme for Pesticides Residues (MACP), run within the EU and EFTA in/on products of plant origin As per Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, repealing the directive 91/414, methomyl is not approved for use in the European Union (EU). A maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.01 mg/kg is applicable for its presence in most of the commodities with an MRL of 0.2 mg/kg particularly for lettuce and cotton seeds, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/1822.
